Acupuncture & Chronic Pain

A recent study, financed by the National Institutes of Health and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that acupuncture can provide relief for migraines, osteoarthritis, and other forms of chronic pain.

This was a meta-study, which combines the results of many other research projects, and included data from nearly 18,000 patients. It showed that acupuncture, which involves inserting small needles at various places on the body to stimulate “acupoints,” outperformed many standard treatments when used by people suffering from headaches, and chronic back, neck and shoulder pain.

The researchers stated they think this is firm, robust evidence supporting the use of acupuncture for the treatment of chronic pain. Their painstaking analysis which included a team of investigators from around the world took six years to complete.

Acupuncture is already one of the most practiced forms of alternative medicine in the country, and is offered by many hospitals and doctor’s offices, including Chiropractic Care Millennium Park and Chiropractic Care Homewood.
